Knowing I was going into the first year of a legitimate cut flower business, this plant was a non-negotiable part of the 2025 garden plan. But you should know that over-wintering these flowers in zone 6b is no small task. First it began with ordering corms and starting the pre-sprouting process. Then, in late October I transplanted them from trays into flower beds and watered regularly to help them adjust. Next was the task of figuring out some sort of structure to protect the baby sprouts from our harsh winter weather. I created hoops with fencing wire and covered the low tunnels with greenhouse plastic and frost cloth. When the first hard freezes came I was a little nervous, but quickly gained confidence when they survived each one and remained a healthy green color. When January came, we had over a week of single digit temps as well as some sub zero nightly lows. My structures were beaten and wonky from piles of snow and wind. I lost a few plants from the extreme cold and all the flowers were very stressed. During the most frigid night, I even had it so cozy in there that some sort of critters managed to get in the tunnels and hunker down until the cold passed. After many weeks of repeatedly covering and uncovering my structures, hints of spring slowly (finally) emerged. More daylight, higher nightly temperatures and lots of pretty green growth felt like light at the end of the tunnel. During the months of March and April I focused on fertilizing, watering and de-budding. Yes, even though it absolutely killed me inside, I picked buds off of these plants for about two weeks. But it was TOTALLY worth it. As a result, I have tons of stems and they are long and beautiful! This growing process has lasted nearly eight months and every bit of work has made these first few blooms even sweeter. I think I’ve got the ranunculus bug and will likely be growing these flowers every single year from now on. When I was a kid, I had absolutely no interest in flowers. I thought they were for old ladies who had nothing better to do and I never paid any attention to them. Both my grandmas loved their flowers. They had peonies, daffodils, zinnias, roses, clematis, iris and much more. It wasn’t until the year after both my grandmas were gone that I decided to try a cut flower garden. It makes me sad that I didn’t find this hobby in time to share it with them. There are many days, especially when working in my garden, that I wonder what it would be like if they were still here. To get to share my love of flowers with them and for them to know their great grandchild. I’m grateful for the time I had with them both, but always wish it was longer. I guess it’s a good reminder that you have less time with your loved ones today than you did yesterday. I keep memories of them both in my current garden- from my grandma Daisy I have a John Deere colored horseshoe flower that was welded by my grandpa. And from my grandma Shirley I have a white trellis that she used for her clematis. If you are reading this today and still have living grandparents- go see them and appreciate your time. Wondering about the future always seems so uncertain, but then I glance back at the past and can smile at how things have worked out. Here is the story of the first time I stepped foot on the property where my flower field resides: My cousin called and said she was going to hang out with some new friends she had met since starting college and wanted me to tag along. The place was just a few miles from my parents house and we were going mattress surfing in a hay pasture. We showed up to a bunch of guys with a mattress tied to the back of a 4 wheeler and spent hours riding around and taking turns getting thrown off. Little did I know, that was a very big day in my life. That was the day I met who would become my husband and in a few short years I would call that place home. It is the place I grew my first garden and I am now raising my family here with a fresh-cut flower business. It’s just kind of funny to look back and see where it all started.
