Quality Time > Screen Time - Blog 9
We are bombarded today with so much technology that I believe it has desensitized us from being real people. Everyone is so absorbed in what they see online that we are forgetting to unplug and be present in the moment.
We wake up to a tiny screen and consume content all day that doesn’t portray reality. It fosters shame and discontentment in our own lives, seeing others only sharing the picture perfect snippets of their day and making us believe we are doing something wrong.
Original thought is nearly obsolete when you can just open a search bar and have all the work done for you within seconds. Why should we even try to do it when the internet is so much more efficient? You can try to say that our phones are saving time, but I would argue that they’re usually wasting it.
The technology age is great for some things and I completely agree that it can be a useful tool in many ways. But I also know that it is training us to be isolated zombies with no creativity and a demand for instant gratification. We need to remember that hard work is fulfilling and creativity is fun. A screen can’t replace true human connection and actual relationships.
This is your reminder- and encouragement- to go to the library. Read a physical copy of a book. Find a new hobby or creative outlet. Go for a walk. Visit your neighbors and create relationships. Go to the farmer’s market. Have intentional no-screen time with your family. Do a puzzle. Try a new recipe. Visit your local businesses. Call your grandparents. Volunteer and serve your community. Remember that technology is a great resource but don’t fall into the trap of letting it distract you from the beauty of real life.
